The VCU Health Office of Inclusive Excellence is hosting its second commemoration to honor civil rights pioneer Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Walk and Celebration is happening on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. It aims to highlight King’s trailblazing civil rights work as well as VCU Health’s commitment to promoting accessibility and belonging, with the mission of preserving and restoring the health for all people of Virginia and beyond.
“The theme provided by the King Center “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365.” It reminds us that we have a responsibility to continue the work that Dr. King started by learning about our history, acknowledging our mistakes, and celebrating our journey so we can move forward together,” said Marcelle Davis, DSL, MBA, vice president of inclusive excellence for VCU Health System. “The 2nd Annual Community Walk and Celebration gives us the platform to do this, and we are honored to bring our community together.”
The walk starts in front of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s Children’s Pavilion on Broad Street and will end at the Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building. Once in the building’s auditorium, there will be an indoor program featuring several speakers. After the program, participants will return to the Children’s Pavilion.
VCU Health team members, VCU faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to participate in this celebration. The event is being coordinated by a collaborative effort of the Office of Inclusive Excellence and several groups across VCU Health and Virginia Commonwealth University, including the VCU School of Medicine.
The walk will follow the same path as last year, from outside Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s Children’s Pavilion to the Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building. (Enterprise Marketing and Communications)
